  217. The if command was written very early in CMake's history, predating
  218. the ``${}`` variable evaluation syntax, and for convenience evaluates
  219. variables named by its arguments as shown in the above signatures.
  220. Note that normal variable evaluation with ``${}`` applies before the if
  221. command even receives the arguments. Therefore code like
  222. .. code-block:: cmake
  223. set(var1 OFF)
  224. set(var2 "var1")
  225. if(${var2})
  226. appears to the if command as
  227. .. code-block:: cmake
  228. if(var1)
  229. and is evaluated according to the ``if(<variable>)`` case documented
  230. above. The result is ``OFF`` which is false. However, if we remove the
  231. ``${}`` from the example then the command sees

  236. Automatic evaluation applies in the other cases whenever the
  237. above-documented condition syntax accepts ``<variable|string>``:
  238. * The left hand argument to ``MATCHES`` is first checked to see if it is
  239. a defined variable, if so the variable's value is used, otherwise the
  240. original value is used.
  241. * If the left hand argument to ``MATCHES`` is missing it returns false
  242. without error
  243. * Both left and right hand arguments to ``LESS``, ``GREATER``, ``EQUAL``,
  244. ``LESS_EQUAL``, and ``GREATER_EQUAL``, are independently tested to see if
  245. they are defined variables, if so their defined values are used otherwise
  246. the original value is used.
  247. * Both left and right hand arguments to ``STRLESS``, ``STRGREATER``,
  248. ``STREQUAL``, ``STRLESS_EQUAL``, and ``STRGREATER_EQUAL`` are independently
  249. tested to see if they are defined variables, if so their defined values are
  250. used otherwise the original value is used.
