  14. Evaluates the ``condition`` argument of the ``if`` clause according to the
  15. `Condition syntax`_ described below. If the result is true, then the
  16. ``commands`` in the ``if`` block are executed.
  17. Otherwise, optional ``elseif`` blocks are processed in the same way.
  18. Finally, if no ``condition`` is true, ``commands`` in the optional ``else``
  19. block are executed.
  20. Per legacy, the ``else`` and ``endif`` clause may also have a ``condition`` argument,
  21. which then must be a verbatim repeat of the argument of the opening ``if`` clause.
  22. Condition Syntax
  23. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  24. The following syntax applies to the ``condition`` argument of
  25. the ``if``, ``elseif`` and :command:`while` clauses.
  26. Compound conditions are evaluated in the following order of precedence:
  27. Innermost parentheses are evaluated first. Next come unary tests such
  28. as ``EXISTS``, ``COMMAND``, and ``DEFINED``. Then binary tests such as
  29. ``EQUAL``, ``LESS``, ``LESS_EQUAL``, ``GREATER``, ``GREATER_EQUAL``,
  30. ``STREQUAL``, ``STRLESS``, ``STRLESS_EQUAL``, ``STRGREATER``,
  31. ``STRGREATER_EQUAL``, ``VERSION_EQUAL``, ``VERSION_LESS``,
  32. ``VERSION_LESS_EQUAL``, ``VERSION_GREATER``, ``VERSION_GREATER_EQUAL``,
  33. and ``MATCHES``. Then the boolean operators in the order ``NOT``, ``AND``,
  34. and finally ``OR``.
  35. Possible conditions are:
  36. ``if(<constant>)``
  37. True if the constant is ``1``, ``ON``, ``YES``, ``TRUE``, ``Y``,
  38. or a non-zero number. False if the constant is ``0``, ``OFF``,
  39. ``NO``, ``FALSE``, ``N``, ``IGNORE``, ``NOTFOUND``, the empty string,
  40. or ends in the suffix ``-NOTFOUND``. Named boolean constants are
  41. case-insensitive. If the argument is not one of these specific
  42. constants, it is treated as a variable or string and the following
  43. signature is used.
  44. ``if(<variable|string>)``
  45. True if given a variable that is defined to a value that is not a false
  46. constant. False otherwise. (Note macro arguments are not variables.)
  47. ``if(NOT <condition>)``
  48. True if the condition is not true.
  49. ``if(<cond1> AND <cond2>)``
  50. True if both conditions would be considered true individually.
  51. ``if(<cond1> OR <cond2>)``
  52. True if either condition would be considered true individually.
  53. ``if(COMMAND command-name)``
  54. True if the given name is a command, macro or function that can be
  55. invoked.
  56. ``if(POLICY policy-id)``
  57. True if the given name is an existing policy (of the form ``CMP<NNNN>``).
  58. ``if(TARGET target-name)``
  59. True if the given name is an existing logical target name created
  60. by a call to the :command:`add_executable`, :command:`add_library`,
  61. or :command:`add_custom_target` command that has already been invoked
  62. (in any directory).
  63. ``if(TEST test-name)``
  64. True if the given name is an existing test name created by the
  65. :command:`add_test` command.
  66. ``if(EXISTS path-to-file-or-directory)``
  67. True if the named file or directory exists. Behavior is well-defined
  68. only for full paths.
  69. ``if(file1 IS_NEWER_THAN file2)``
  70. True if ``file1`` is newer than ``file2`` or if one of the two files doesn't
  71. exist. Behavior is well-defined only for full paths. If the file
  72. time stamps are exactly the same, an ``IS_NEWER_THAN`` comparison returns
  73. true, so that any dependent build operations will occur in the event
  74. of a tie. This includes the case of passing the same file name for
  75. both file1 and file2.
  76. ``if(IS_DIRECTORY path-to-directory)``
  77. True if the given name is a directory. Behavior is well-defined only
  78. for full paths.
  79. ``if(IS_SYMLINK file-name)``
  80. True if the given name is a symbolic link. Behavior is well-defined
  81. only for full paths.
  82. ``if(IS_ABSOLUTE path)``
  83. True if the given path is an absolute path.
  84. ``if(<variable|string> MATCHES regex)``
  85. True if the given string or variable's value matches the given regular
  86. condition. See :ref:`Regex Specification` for regex format.
  87. ``()`` groups are captured in :variable:`CMAKE_MATCH_<n>` variables.

  89. True if the given string or variable's value is a valid number and less

  145. ``if(DEFINED <variable>)``
  146. True if the given variable is defined. It does not matter if the
  147. variable is true or false just if it has been set. (Note macro
  148. arguments are not variables.)
  149. ``if((condition) AND (condition OR (condition)))``
  150. The conditions inside the parenthesis are evaluated first and then
  151. the remaining condition is evaluated as in the previous examples.
  152. Where there are nested parenthesis the innermost are evaluated as part
  153. of evaluating the condition that contains them.
  154. Variable Expansion
  155. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  156. The if command was written very early in CMake's history, predating
  157. the ``${}`` variable evaluation syntax, and for convenience evaluates
  158. variables named by its arguments as shown in the above signatures.
  159. Note that normal variable evaluation with ``${}`` applies before the if
  160. command even receives the arguments. Therefore code like::
  161. set(var1 OFF)
  162. set(var2 "var1")
  163. if(${var2})
  164. appears to the if command as::
  165. if(var1)
  166. and is evaluated according to the ``if(<variable>)`` case documented
  167. above. The result is ``OFF`` which is false. However, if we remove the
  168. ``${}`` from the example then the command sees::
  169. if(var2)
  170. which is true because ``var2`` is defined to "var1" which is not a false
  171. constant.
  172. Automatic evaluation applies in the other cases whenever the
  173. above-documented signature accepts ``<variable|string>``:
  174. * The left hand argument to ``MATCHES`` is first checked to see if it is
  175. a defined variable, if so the variable's value is used, otherwise the
  176. original value is used.
  177. * If the left hand argument to ``MATCHES`` is missing it returns false
  178. without error
  179. * Both left and right hand arguments to ``LESS``, ``GREATER``, ``EQUAL``,
  180. ``LESS_EQUAL``, and ``GREATER_EQUAL``, are independently tested to see if
  181. they are defined variables, if so their defined values are used otherwise
  182. the original value is used.
  183. * Both left and right hand arguments to ``STRLESS``, ``STRGREATER``,
  184. ``STREQUAL``, ``STRLESS_EQUAL``, and ``STRGREATER_EQUAL`` are independently
  185. tested to see if they are defined variables, if so their defined values are
  186. used otherwise the original value is used.
  187. * Both left and right hand arguments to ``VERSION_LESS``,
  188. ``VERSION_GREATER``, ``VERSION_EQUAL``, ``VERSION_LESS_EQUAL``, and
  189. ``VERSION_GREATER_EQUAL`` are independently tested to see if they are defined
  190. variables, if so their defined values are used otherwise the original value
  191. is used.
  192. * The right hand argument to ``NOT`` is tested to see if it is a boolean
  193. constant, if so the value is used, otherwise it is assumed to be a
  194. variable and it is dereferenced.
  195. * The left and right hand arguments to ``AND`` and ``OR`` are independently
  196. tested to see if they are boolean constants, if so they are used as
  197. such, otherwise they are assumed to be variables and are dereferenced.
  198. To prevent ambiguity, potential variable or keyword names can be
  199. specified in a :ref:`Quoted Argument` or a :ref:`Bracket Argument`.
  200. A quoted or bracketed variable or keyword will be interpreted as a
  201. string and not dereferenced or interpreted.
